Greetings! My name is Shana Market (Norton). I am blessed to be able to work with amazing students and/or adults each and every day. I have always had a strong love, interest, and appreciation for art therapy. To be honest, I love listening to and teaching children of all ages. I love being there when they need that extra boost. I had so many different adults pour into my life when I was a teenager who was struggling with life issues, and it is my goal to do the same for my students. My teaching career started off when I helped my mother teach Sunday School... and then it led to me volunteering with Camp Sunshine. During college, I was a substitute teacher in Gwinnett and Dekalb Counties. I then taught Visual Arts at Peachtree Middle and also at Snellville Middle School. Jefferson City Schools offered me a position in 2002 teaching 7th and 8th grade art and also K-12th grade ESOL. I was working extended day working with all ages of students who were from all over the globe! I later took the full time art position at Jefferson Middle School and remained there until 2015. I had earned my Doctorate in Teaching and Learning as well as my Specialist in Instructional Supervision and was ready for a different challenge. I was THRILLED when Dr. Brown from North Oconee High School offered me a position as a Special Education/Math teacher. I taught Advanced Algebra and Algebra for two years and also helped to supervise the learning experiences of my 13 case load students. I now am teaching Study Skills and Social Skills and am loving it. I bring art into the classroom... art therapy... math... reading...writing...LOVE... It's a good thing.
In addition to being an art teacher, I am also the mother of two wonderful boys who have completely stolen my heart and made me fall in love more than I knew was possible. They have shown me how much God must love us. I also have a wonderful niece who is seven and I also have a newborn nephew.
My educational background is in Psychology, Special Education, Leadership, and Art Education, so I am very interested in using the arts as therapy. I completed my Educational Doctorate with an emphasis in Teaching and Learning. My dissertation can be found here in the event that you can't sleep. One day, I might venture into administration or back into art therapy, but for now, "my cup runneth over" right where I am at!
Hi Shana,
ReplyDeleteI am so glad I found your wonderful blog. I am teaching 6th grade and am planning a unit on humor/claes oldenburg.
I noticed your project with 8th graders and the images look amazing!
If you have any advice or tips with building the food sculptures I would love to hear form you.
I am wondering, how long did it take to complete?
Was storage an issue?
Were the students engaged?
Thanks!
Rebecca
