Studying Various Artists

A challenge (or joy, sometimes) of teaching art is how to encorporate art history into your lessons and how to REALLY get the students to know the artists or eras that you are discussing. One of my precious, fabulous, and wonderful student teachers (who now teaches at a NE GA elementary school- yeah!!) brought us a lesson that incorporates studying artists biographies with creating artwork.

We had the students vote on a teacher in the school that they would be drawing/painting. Each of the two classes chose a different coach/teacher. Both have since moved on to other schools or changed career paths!
Each student got a black and white printed picture of the coach. Each student was told to choose an artist and had to render that teacher/coach in the fashion of the artist. When they presented their work, they had to tell us about the artist.
