Exquisite (Corpse) Dragons

"Exquisite corpse, also known as exquisite cadaver (from the original French term cadavre exquis) or rotating corpse, is a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled." The 6th grade students had certain measurements by which to make their dragons. We looked at a PowerPoint of dragons as well as books and print outs of various animal parts, very few actual dragons. The students had to draw their dragon and then cut it into strips. They had to trade 2 of their 3 pieces with someone else. They then taped the back, added detailed patterns, and then added shaded colored pencil. They had previously practiced the value scale and blending. We discussed how to make lines look like they were going around an object, such as a leg or body. They had to figure out a habitat for their creature by looking through various landscape pictures, and then watercolor the background. They did a fantastic job!
