Crumble a cookie, CRUMPLE paper...

The 7th graders and I had a great discussion about this. :) The students are working on their drawing unit. They are currently working on contour drawings. They have practiced using a view finder, holding a pencil up, closing one eye to flatten the image, looking at where things line up, and many other drawings tricks! I will post more later...

Skulls...

The 8th graders are in the middle of their portrait unit. They are learning about skull dimensions and proportions. They will be drawing these with a dark pencil, showing the shading, and then will reverse it later this week with a white colored pencil and darker paper.

What's the Value?

 The students at JMS have been working on their value scales, and practicing how to shade with a pen (versus a pencil)... they have worked on hatching, cross hatching, scribbling, etc. and will hopefully apply what they have learned in the upcoming drawing exercises!

We have practiced drawing spheres in art (probably since kindergarten with Mrs. Wheeler!) for years. The students had to trace different sized circles, making sure that they overlapped, then they had to practice what they learned about drawing spheres and make the hook part of the ornament. They then had to draw the highlight. We discussed light sources and how the highlight should be on the same side for each (we don't want to get too complicated...).

We discussed painting them with watercolors and making sure to use analogous colors on each... colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. We also discussed how the highlight should be painted the lighter color. The results are fantastic. It's a holiday type of lesson and the students really seem to like it!

Streeeettttcccchhhed Magazine Pictures

 

This idea was taken from the wonderful art teachers at Mill Creek High School. I must give them credit! This is a lesson plan that involved looking at and studying color, real versus implied. The students have to trace a magazine image, color it as it really appears, and then cut that and the magazine image into strips. They are then glued, alternating, to the larger piece of paper. The results show great movement and rhythm. We discussed rhythm and repetition in the class before getting into this assignment.
