Skulls... the beginning of the Portrait

The 8th graders worked on the skull proportions so that they could better draw the skull. This was the beginning of our portrait unit. There are more further back in the blog. These students just completed theirs.

Skulls...

The 8th graders are in the middle of their portrait unit. They are learning about skull dimensions and proportions. They will be drawing these with a dark pencil, showing the shading, and then will reverse it later this week with a white colored pencil and darker paper.

Eek! Skulls

The 8th graders aren't getting ready for Halloween. They are studying the bone structure of the face for their portrait unit. They drew one where they focused on shadows (black on white) and one where they focused on the highlights (white on black).

They have completed these skulls, are working on their Lion's Club Peace Poster contest, and then they will go back to drawing portraits. We will look at Frida Kahlo and various other portrait artists.

Another skull

I found yet another skull that had to be posted. This child worked really hard. By now, we are already into our portrait unit. We have taken notes on drawing facial proportions. I will post those at a later time and date.

Beginnings of a Portrait Lesson

These precious folks are working so hard at learning how to draw a skull, where the proportions are, etc. We are getting warmed up for our portrait unit. I do this with every 8th grade class in the high hopes of helping them out in high school.  Few things bring me joy greater than seeing the students working so hard, with little harassing from my part. Thank you to the parents who raised such fine students!
