Dreaming of the Water....

The most perfectly fabulous 6th grade students have been learning how to appropriately use watercolor. We worked for a full hour on watercolor techniques, practicing various methods such as wet on wet, wet on dry, dry brush, salt, masking, etc. They also have been studying the Canadian artist, Emily Carr, They drew trees using pencils and sharpies and then are going to use their new skills to complete the trees with watercolor. They work so hard! Below are the watercolor practice pages:

Ornaments

How precious!! The 6th and 7th graders are working on their spheres, shading, blending, etc. They are using mixed media, with colored pencils, watercolor, pencils, sharpie, and whatever else they can find. Some have even touched things up with the magical silver sharpie. Why not?! Life is short :)

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

I have to give credit where credit is due... I found this wonderful idea on the website below:

We have practiced drawing spheres in art (probably since kindergarten with Mrs. Wheeler!) for years. The students had to trace different sized circles, making sure that they overlapped, then they had to practice what they learned about drawing spheres and make the hook part of the ornament. They then had to draw the highlight. We discussed light sources and how the highlight should be on the same side for each (we don't want to get too complicated...).

We discussed painting them with watercolors and making sure to use analogous colors on each... colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. We also discussed how the highlight should be painted the lighter color. The results are fantastic. It's a holiday type of lesson and the students really seem to like it!
