Warm and Cool Landscapes

The 6th graders have been working on their warm and cool color landscapes recently. I printed off some black and white landscapes that they then redrew. They then traced their own drawings to create two similar drawings. They use colored pencils for shading (we discussed how to squint your eyes so that you could break down the light and dark areas) and then used watercolor to fill in the white spaces. Warm and Cool Landscapes

My precious 6th graders study color theory during the semester. After much discussion of warm and cool colors, as well as a lesson or two on practicing watercolor, they sketch out a landscape (we divide the images into four quadrants and also divide our paper into four areas so that it is easier to draw, using a slight grid). As you can see, some students prefer to add a bit of architecture. The results are divine! We discuss how the colors impact the mood of the painting. Lovely!
