The students folded a piece of paper in half long-ways. They then wrote their name in cursive (Did you know that many students cannot write in cursive? It is apparently not taught like it was when "I was growing up"). They had to write their name backwards so that it made a mirror image. This worked the right side of the brain. We discussed colors and patterns as well as features such as wings and horns. They created their aliens from there.
